All over the country, book clubs are becoming more and more
popular. At places like Borders, Barnes and Noble and others,
people can be seen any night of the week reading and discussing
books. Now you will have that opportunity too! But you and your
mentor can do it in the comfort of your own classroom or office as
you discuss a book of your choice.

First things first, together choose a book that you might like to read.
Once you do, begin reading. When something interesting comes up,
or you have a question, contact each other to discuss. When you have
finished your book, complete at least 2 or more of these activities.

Activity 1: More Alike than Different

* What character are you most like?
* What character are you least like?
* If you had to choose one of the characters to be your friend,
whom would you choose and why?
* What was the most exciting part of the book?
*
Did the book make you feel any other emotions?
* If you could change one thing about the book, what would it be?
* Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not?

Activity 2: If I Were the Author ...
Play author and write a new ending to the book you have read.
Share it with one another.

  Activity 3: Category Craze
Brainstorm items that were used in the story. Make a list of at least 20. Then get
creative; create as many categories as you can for the items. Here's an example:

Things found in Fairy Tales - broom, wicked stepmother, gingerbread house,
oven, basket, pebbles, woodcutter, candy, birdcage, glass slipper, carriage,
prince, princess, queen, king, sword, horse, mice, dwarfs, mirror, apple, castle, hut.

Now categorize them. (Must contain at least 2 items to be considered a category):
Modes of Transportation - broom, carriage, horse Royal Relatives - queen, king,
princess, prince Edible Items - candy, apple, gingerbread house

Get the idea? Now you try it! Which of you came up with the most unusual category?

Activity 4: Thumbs Up? Five Star Rating? You Decide!

Become book critics. Together, create a rating system, then rate this book for potential
readers! Write a short review of the book and consider posting in on www.amazon.com,
a Web site that sells books and other items, and gives customers the opportunity to
submit book reviews so that other customers can read them as they consider which
books to buy. Make sure to proofread your review for proper sentence structure,
spelling and grammar!

  Activity 5: Setting Scramble
If the book you read were to take place in a totally new setting, how would the book
change? For example if Goldilocks and the Three Bears became Goldilocks and
the Three Fish, the setting would change from the forest to the bottom of the ocean.
How would it effect the story and its outcome? Make a list and share it.

Activity 6: Rising and Falling Action!
Discuss the rising action, climax and falling action of the story. Create a graphic
(chart, drawing, and timeline) that displays this information in an easy to understand
format! Share it with each other.

  Activity 7: Create an Ad!
Advertise this book to others! Work together to create a unique advertisement for this
book. Be sure to include what you liked about it and give at least 3 reasons why
someone would want to read it! Use a lot of adjectives to describe why you liked it!
