            Knowing what is going on in the world is an important part
             of being an informed citizen. Events that happen on the national
              level - like in Congress -- or on an international level - like at the
               United Nations - have reverberations in all of our lives. The good
               new is that keeping up with the latest breaking news has become
             much easier through the use of technology. Online updates occur
           regularly so waiting for information is no longer an issue. You can
         get it at the touch of a button if you know where to look. In this
       project, you will have the opportunity to study current events and
    find out how to keep informed on the world around you.
    Activity 1: News at Your Fingertips!
           In this activity, you will explore the latest breaking news and the most current events
   by visiting one of the sites listed below. Together choose one of the following sites
  to explore. Once you have chosen your site, choose a "hot topic" or "breaking story"
to discuss. Think about if and how the story affects you.

* CNN @ http://www.cnn.com
* ABC News @ http://www.abc.com
* Kid's Post @ http://www.washingtonpost.com/kidspost/
* Time for Kids @ http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/news/now
* US News for Kids @ http://www.usnews.com/usnews/home.htm

Do you have other favorite sites that you use to find the latest news, sports
or weather? Share your ideas. If you continue this activity for several days,
look at how the breaking story changes. Is there one dominant story that
continues to stay in the news? Discuss these questions.

  Activity 2: Weather Watch
    Whether stormy, sunny, or sweltering hot, the weather affects your life. Take a
few minutes to share your favorite kind of weather. Do you enjoy hot, sunny
days that are perfect for a trip to the beach, or do you prefer snowy, wintry
days that are great for building snowmen and sitting by the fire with your
favorite book? Describe the kind of weather you prefer, and include what
you like to do on those kinds of days.

If you want a challenge, go to Intellicast @ http://www.intellicast.com and
find cities around the United States or world that begin with the letters in
your name. Find out what the weather is like today. Share that information.

  Activity 3: Sports Talk
    Who is your favorite athlete? What professional sports team(s) do you follow? Are you
a football, basketball, baseball or hockey fan? Maybe you prefer lacrosse or soccer?
Share information about your favorite sport, team or player. Now think about local teams
in your area. Where might you look for information about a High School football team or
a local Little League team? Find out and share your information.

  Activity 4: International Flavor

Using the websites sites listed below, find a news story from a country different than
your own. What country or nations are in the news? What is happening there?
Does this particular story impact your country in some way? Find a story to discuss.
You might look for a story that involves a country that is closest to the United States,
or find one the greatest distance from your own home town.

* CNN @ http://www.cnn.com
* ABC News @ http://www.abc.com
* Kid's Post @ http://www.washingtonpost.com/kidspost/
* Time for Kids @ http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/news/now
* US News for Kids @ http://www.usnews.com/usnews/home.htm

  Activity 5: Local and Late Breaking
    Does your community have an online newspaper? Find out and share the address.
If you don't have one in your town or city, locate the one closest to you that might
include some news on your community. Once you have found a site, share it!
Choose a story on your community from the website to discuss. How does that
story impact you, your family or friends?
