Knowing what the weather will be like is important whether you
are deciding what to wear or planning an outdoor activity. Try these
fun weather-related activities with your mentor!

Activity 1: Bon Voyage!

Mentors pretend you are about to take a trip to another state or
even another country to enjoy outdoor activities. Share this destination
      with your student.

Students should visit www.weather.com to find out what the weather is like at

that location. Share this information with your mentor. Based upon what you learn, also
give your mentor suggestions about what clothes to pack and what outdoor activities to enjoy.

  Activity 2: Weather Folklore

Before more scientific ways of forecasting the weather were developed, weather predictions were often based both on folklore and on observation skills.

Here are a few bits of weather wisdom:

  • Red sky at night, sailors delight
  • When a spider leaves his web by noon, fine weather is coming soon!
  • When a rooster goes crowing to bed, he will rise with a watery head.
  • Birds flying low...expect rain and a blow.
  • Trout jump high when rain is nigh!

Do you think any of these weather sayings are accurate? What do you think each one means?
Why are animals included in so many of them? Share and discuss these questions with one
another. Do you know any more bits of weather folklore that you can share? Mentors create
some weather folklore of your own and challenge your student to do the same!
