Before more
scientific ways of forecasting the weather were developed, weather
predictions were often based both on folklore and on observation
skills.
Here are a
few bits of weather wisdom:
- Red sky
at night, sailors delight
- When a
spider leaves his web by noon, fine weather is coming soon!
- When a
rooster goes crowing to bed, he will rise with a watery head.
- Birds flying
low...expect rain and a blow.
- Trout jump
high when rain is nigh!
Do you think
any of these weather sayings are accurate? What do you think each
one means?
Why are animals included in so many of them? Share and discuss these
questions with one
another. Do you know any more bits of weather folklore that you
can share? Mentors create
some weather folklore of your own and challenge your student to
do the same!
